Smoked Salmon

After my sunrise ride over the Thames, I treated myself to a breakfast of smoked salmon, scrambled eggs, toast and fresh-squeezed orange juice. Thinly sliced salmon is smoked to preserve the against spoiling by curing and partially dehydrating the fish. Smoked salmon featured in large gatherings Greek and Roman culture, and by the Middle Ages... Continue Reading →

Sunrise over the Thames

I started early this morning--before the sun came up I made my way to the River Thames where I crossed the Westminster Bridge, rode along the south shore, crossed the London Bridge, and returned back along the north shore to Big Ben. Looking back at Big Ben The London Eye William Shakespeare's Globe Theatre Approaching... Continue Reading →

Scotch Eggs

A boiled egg. Wrapped in sausage meat. Rolled in breadcrumbs. Deep fried. Extremely delicious! My Scotch egg was served with applesauce at The Mall Tavern in Notting Hill.

Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park

From my hotel room window on Bayswater Road I had a lovely view into Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park. I rode through the parks by day and by night, passing a couple of times the home where J. M. Barrie wrote Peter Pan (No. 100 Bayswater). Hyde Park is the largest of four Royal Parks... Continue Reading →

British Scones

During my first ride in London, I stopped at teatime for British scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream accompanied by a mug of thick, rich hot chocolate. This classic British dish originated in Scotland in the early 16th century, with a first print reference in a 1513 poem. They were originally larger, made with... Continue Reading →

London

A global financial center. Capital and largest city of the United Kingdom. Seat of empire. Hub of fashion and culture. When my work took me to London, I once again grabbed a trusty Brompton and took to the streets. I rode early morning, mid-day, and in the dark of night. Here are some of my... Continue Reading →

Alex’s Bakery

I celebrated my tour of Manchester with a stop at Alex's Bakery for a "toastie" (grilled cheese sandwich), a slice of sweet bread, and a luxurious hot chocolate with strawberry and whipped cream. Yum! With so many more delicias on the menu, I'll need to stop in again some time!

Manchester, England

Today I arose before sunrise, took a tram to the centre of Manchester, hired (rented) a Brompton, and took a lovely ride around the city. Rainy days before and more of the same forecasts for after, but on this morning the sky was clear, the air fresh, and the city quite empty as I began... Continue Reading →

Brompton Foldable Bike

When I first heard of the foldable bike from Brompton I was immediately intrigued. Could a bicycle fold up small enough to be convenient and unfold into a bicycle worth riding? The logistical part of the process turned out to be really easy: I loaded the app on my phone, set up my account details,... Continue Reading →

Fish and Chips

Fresh fish, battered and fried in hot oil, served with friend potato slices. Arriving in Manchester late this evening, I knew of no more appropriate way to prepare for an early morning ride than this British classic! This iconic national dish of the United Kingdom is an international fusion food--the fried fish was introduced by... Continue Reading →
