Wasatch Crest Trail

Today Little Brother took me on an epic ride -- an undisputed "must-ride" in Park City and possibly Utah's "finest" mountain bike ride. The Wasatch Crest Trail follows the "backbone of Utah" and forms part of the Great Western Trail, a 3,000-mile route from Canada to Mexico. We picked up the trail at the Guardsman... Blue Supermoon

Tonight I rode into the hills above the Bonneville Shoreline Trail to watch the blue supermoon. A supermoon occurs 3-4 times a year when a full moon happens at the point in its orbit when it is closest to the earth, giving it a slightly larger appearance. A blue moon occurs every 2-3 years when... Continue Reading →

Bountiful Peak

Today I completed an epic ride that I have been imagining for more than a year! More than 30 miles of gravel roads, more than a mile in elevation gain (5,416 ft. - the most in a single ride for me), and another ride above the 9,000-ft.-elevation level. I forded one stream and hiked the... Continue Reading →

Antelope MTB

Today I joined the Weber Davis Mountain Biking group on a no-drop ride over the mountaintops of Antelope Island. We started at the White Rock Bay Campground parking area and ascended via the White Rocks Loop to Elephant Head and then followed the Split Rocks Loop Trail down to the shore and back up again.... Ensign Peak

I hopped on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail in North Salt Lake to ride up the back side of Ensign Peak. The light and clouds were beautiful, making the views stunning! The peak is an oddly-shaped protuberance in the foothills above the state capitol in Salt Lake City that has played an outsized influence on Latter-day... Continue Reading →

Wild Rose Trail

I had some time this evening (after spending the morning at a conference), so I took the chance to ride Wild Rose Trail. It's a short loop (about 2 miles) up and around a hill, with great views of Antelope Island. Strava clocked me at 450 ft. elevation gain and there were two flow trails... Continue Reading →

Cave Peak

This morning I rode around and above Cave Peak in the Sessions Mountains (actually a ridge line) of the Wasatch Mountains. I went up the Mueller Park trail and came down via the North Canyon trail. Cave Peak has a summit height of 6,811 ft., but Strava tracked my max elevation at 7,138 ft. as... Continue Reading →

Alpine Loop

Utah's Alpine Loop has been described as "easily the most popular scenic drive on the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest." I started at the mouth of American Fork Canyon, climbed more than 3,000 feet in the first 11 miles, and then flew down the backside past the fabled Sundance Resort, through Provo Canyon, and along the Murdock... Fire!

On the evening of July 4, fire broke out on the hillside above my home, prompting multiple evacuations in the neighborhoods around me. After a few days, the 128-acre Deuel Creek Fire had been put out by 80 firefighters, 7 engines, and multiple helicopters . . . and the Bonneville Shoreline Trail was passable so... To Feel a Natural High

Riding--with its combination of exercise, meditation, and immersion in nature--always leaves me feeling a "natural high." Today the "high" was also literal with this stunning view from a tiny access road on the back side of Francis Peak, looking east into Morgan County.
