City Creek Canyon in Fall

Today I undertook an epic ride - 40 miles total, with a climb up City Creek Canyon for a total elevation gain of 2,697 feet. The colors were stunning, and the leafy canopies created cool shade and kaleidoscopic light! Descending through the colorful leaves. Stone wall and stone outcroppings. Looking up the canyon.

Farmington Canyon in Fall

Though I have ridden up Farmington Canyon a few times - en route to Francis Peak and to Bountiful Peak - today was my first ride in the fall, and my first on my gravel bike ascending from the valley floor. Beyond the pavement. Going up the canyon. A pink tree at the mouth of... Continue Reading →

Blacksmith Fork Canyon

Rising 1300 feet over 15 miles to the east of Hyrum, UT, Blacksmith Fork Canyon provided a leisurely climb, past a babbling brook, with some autumn leaves just beginning to turn colors. The Blacksmith Fork River winds through the canyon. A gentle climb.

Mueller Park Canyon

Having already ridden up the Mueller Park Trail to the top of Cave Peak, today I decided to take my road bike up the bottom of the canyon to the end of the pavement. It was a lovely way to kick off my October leaf peeping season!

Wasatch Crest Trail

Today Little Brother took me on an epic ride -- an undisputed "must-ride" in Park City and possibly Utah's "finest" mountain bike ride. The Wasatch Crest Trail follows the "backbone of Utah" and forms part of the Great Western Trail, a 3,000-mile route from Canada to Mexico. We picked up the trail at the Guardsman... Cedar Canyon

Warm at the bottom and cold at top. Just over 2,000 ft. of vertical gain in 15 miles put me more than 8,000 above sea level. Southern Utah's classic red rocks at the mouth of the canyon. State Route 14 rises through layers of rocks, trees, and this time of year . . . snow.... Continue Reading →

Farmington Canyon

This morning I rode up Farmington Canyon en route to the top of Francis Peak. It was a steady climb, gravel road, with half a dozen or so switchbacks that revealed great views.

Hobble Creek Canyon

During a visit to Provo, I rode out from my hotel to Springville and then up Hobble Creek Canyon for a nice 30-mile ride with just over 1100 feet elevation gain. Provo City Center Temple

Red Rock Canyon

I started on the west side of the valley, on West Charleston Boulevard. I left the city, climbed Red Rock Canyon Road, and entered the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, the first designated in Nevada. Entering the park, you see nice red rocks at calico Hills, but not much to see beyond that. My... Continue Reading →

Zion Canyon

Late one afternoon in the early spring, I rode up Zion Canyon and basically had the place to myself! Passed by maybe half a dozen mostly empty shuttles, I marveled alone at the soaring canyon walls in the dancing dusk light. Stunning Views The Great White Throne is a mesa composed primarily of white Navajo... Continue Reading →
